On this project, I chose to work with Sawer Ikeda, Poh Maga, and Scott Fisher. We were assigned to make a product to help the world. We were given time to brainstorm about the project and we thought of the good we could for people in third world countries. The first thing that came to our minds were water and the lack of it in Third world countries like Kenya. So we decided to make a well system to improve upon the wells they already have in Africa. We all agreed that the idea was good and started working on the blueprints. First we thought of our name, and the first name that came to mind was Hella Wells. At first we thought of the name as a joke, then we agreed that it was a legitament name. When we started on the blueprints, it helped that Poh drew mechanical sketches in his free time so he knew what he was doing when he was drawing the sketches. We started with an outhouse design for the generator. The drill was a long 1000 meter filtration device with the drill on the end. The drill had a suction device to suck the water through the filter and to the outhouse generator. The clean water would next poor into a large cylinder to contain the water.
The wells that they have in Africa are not very good. They are unsanitary and are a falling hazard for people who walk by the well. Many people don't have any water to drink. Many people do have water to drink, but the water is not clean and is filled with bacteria and mold. These impurities cause cases of cholera, fluorosis, and extreme cases of HIV or AIDS. 3.4 million people die every year due to water related diseases. Even more lack access to clean water. In this picture, these two people are pumping unsanitary water from the well that only produces about 5 gallons per day. That is barely enough for the average amount of intake of water for the both of them, let alone the rest of their entire village.
Reflection
This project really opened my eyes to what problems there are in this world and how many there are especially. Problems such as living conditions, earthquake safety, and energy issues just to name a few. I learned that the United States and its citizens have their lives so easy compared to the rest of the people in the world living in third world countries. We have dean water, fresh food, and a safe country to live in where the rest of the of third world countries have to fight for everything they have and everything they don't.
Our group had a very good connection with each other. We didn't have any issues with agreeing with each other. We also were relatively efficient with time management. We were never behind or stretched for time. Ideas flowed smoothly and quickly so we weren't frustrated. The execution of the final presentation went very well. No one stuttered or made the audience feel awkward, and most of all we were quick with our delivery so the audience never lost interest.
There were very few pitfalls. One of the only pitfalls was our concentration towards the project. Some times we would goof around or lose a little bit of focus on our task ahead. This only happened rarely when we were either waiting for something to happen or just being unproductive. Also, we had a tuff time hearing the other groups ideas in the critical friends. We were so focused on our project that we half ignored the other groups.
