Photosynthesis Lab
Hypothesis
The uncovered leaves will photosynthesize the best. The blue leaf will photosynthesize the 2nd best because it is still receiving waves but is still blocking out other wavelengths. The black leaf will photosynthesize the worst because all of the wavelengths are blocked out.
Procedure
1. Cut off the different leaves.
2. Put the leaves in a test tube.
3. Pour alcohol in the test tubes and then put in boiling water for one minute.
4. Rinse the leaves in water.
5. Add iodine to the leaves in a pitri dish.
Materials
Plant
Test tubes
Leaves
Iodine
Black Paper
Blue cellophane
Results
Uncovered 10
Blue 8.5
Black 8
Conclusion
Uncovered: I think the control will be a strong positive. The photosynthesis process should happen as it normally would.
Blue: The blue covering should have a slight effect on the photosynthesis process. Some light will pass through
Black: The black covering should have a large effect on the process. Very little light will be able to pass through the paper.
This sample tested a strong positive. The Iodine was a very dark blue. This was as expected since it was the control.
The Blue had some effect on the process. The iodine test was a weak positive. This was as expected.
The Black covering had a very strong negative. The leaf was the color of the iodine. This was as expected.
Reflection
I enjoyed this project. My group completed the experiment quickly and correctly. I also enjoyed how it was not a very long drown out process. We only had to wait two days to continue the project instead of weeks. All of our data was correct and confirmed our hypothesis. One thing I would have done differently in this project was I would have rinsed the leaves more than I did. After the boiling, the leaves were very soggy and covered in alcohol. When we went to test the leaves with the iodine solution, there was a lot of liquid in the petri dish. This may have effeted our results slightly.
